The Department of History cordially invites you to

Monks in Politics in Late Imperial Russia

a public lecture by

SIMON DIXON

University College London

The lecture will examine the phenomenon of ‘learned monasticism’ in Russia between 1880 and 1917, concentrating in particular on the career of Archbishop Antonii (Khrapovitskii) and his disciples, the so-called Antonievtsy, and exposing the potential for subversion on the Right by bishops who claimed to be the tsarist regime’s most loyal supporters.

Since 2008, Simon Dixon has been Sir Bernard Pares Professor of Russian History at UCL, having begun his career as a research fellow of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, and been Professor of Modern History at the University of Leeds.
