Faruh’s dissertation project "Muslim Scientists, Muslim Battalions, Muslim Muslims: Sharora — a site of Cold War Connections" will make significant contributions in Cold War and Soviet Central Asian history. A microhistory of a multiethnic, utopian, scientific settlement in rural Tajikistan whose Muslim residents went on to become both scientists and post-Soviet Islamist fighters, the project promises to shed new light on the various trajectories that the Soviet project and its Cold War objectives afforded to the region’s Muslims, as well as offering novel observations on the collapse of the Soviet Union from its peripheries.
