Modernity
How was “Austrian identity” imagined in relation to modernity and what role did modernity play in the imagining of Austrian identity? The International Symposium “Austrian Identity and Modernity /Modernity and Austrian Identity” explores the evolution of national and nationalist identifications as they were represented in- and transformed itself in culture and design over time in response to-, in opposition to, or further contributing to the political happening in the first half of the 20th century.
The International Symposium newly discusses national and nationalistic narratives of the development of “Austrian identity.” Questions arise what role did the aesthetics of Viennese Modernism play in fashioning Austrian identity? What visual and intellectual strategies were applied to form distinct identifications in relation to the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and later to German and Central European politics? And what forms of mediation were constructed between Vienna and the different states in Austria to represent shared “Austrian identity” in the First Republic and in the early period of the Second Republic?
