Obituary András Gerő

January 10, 2023
It is with sadness that the Department of History learned about the loss of one of its founding members, Professor András Gerő, who passed away at the age of 70.

András Gerő graduated from Eötvös University (ELTE, Budapest) in 1977 and started his long and successful teaching career at the same institution, from 1981 onwards at the new Department of Cultural History.  After visting professorships at several Dutch and US universities, he was the long-standing head of the Department of Economic and Social History at ELTE, and in 2003 became the founder and director of the Institute of Habsburg History (Budapest). He published over 70 volumes in Hungarian, English and German as author or (co-)editor, mostly in the field of modern Habsburg and Central European social, cultural and political history, and was the recipient of several prestigious prizes and awards.

András taught at the CEU Department of History from the very beginning (1991) until 2020. He was a popular teacher never short of anecdotes, whose granular knowledge of Habsburg history, passionate commentary on public affairs and biting sense of humour was always appreciated by students and colleagues.

The CEU History Department expresses its deep condolences to András's family and friends.
