Thinking Globally: Imperial Legacies in the Modern World

In recent years, an indisputable rise in the historical research on empires, nationalism, colonialism, and post-imperial political orders as alternatives to the national historiographies has occurred from the perspectives of global and comparative history. The perception of the modern world is indeed rooted in the history of empires and their broad legacies. Filling the lacuna in the research of imperial heritage, the graduate student workshop is dedicated to the exploration of various imperial dimensions in the making of the modern world, including the legal, political, cultural, social legacies in the global and transnational contexts. The event will not only enable an exchange of ideas and modern views on the proposed issues, but will also fill blank spots in the study of empires and their heritage.

The research seminar is organized by the CEU Soviet and Post-Soviet Studies Research Group (also known as “The Soviet Kitchen”) in cooperation with the History Department.  The workshop is arranged in the form of panel sessions with 10-15 minutes’ presentations by MA and PhD students on each topic, followed by a discussion moderated by Prof. Marsha Siefert and Prof. Alexander Semyonov. The workshop is preceded by a keynote speech from Prof. Alfred J. Rieber.
